This report is a collaborative effort of Alderhill Planning Inc and the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General to design, facilitate and support a community-based engagement framework to inform the development of strategies and initiatives related to systemic causes of violence against Indigenous women and girls in the Province of BC; and, to ensure that information sharing was done in a manner that considered culture and protocol and supported healing.

We would like to give a special acknowledgement to Lauren Terbasket, who led the creation of the “Framework for Community Based Consultation Sessions On the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls”  the 12 sessions that were hosted across the province of British Columbia, and for directing us to practice ceremony from the beginning, throughout and to the end and who encouraged the process to reflect the teachings of Coyote and Fox.

We would also like to acknowledge the community of the Penticton Indian Band, in particular, our elder Hazel Squakin and her daughter Marlene Squakin for their ongoing support, input and reminders and teachings as well as our language speakers and storytellers for sharing their teachings around the Enowkinwixw process.

To lifelong educator and protector and professor of Indigenous Studies and a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Philosophy, Dr. Jeannette Armstrong is a spokesperson for Indigenous Peoples’ rights and is an award-winning writer and activist. Without the sharing of her lifetime of research and knowledge and teachings, work like this would not be possible.

We would like to acknowledge the matriarchs from across the province who helped create a safe space, ensured connections and protocols in each territory were followed and that all of our participants were supported to do the work that was needed. Tracy Point, Rhonda George, Kandice Charlie, Sherylynn Crispin, Roxana Wilson, Coreen Child, Deb Foxcroft, Kathy Wesley, Judy Wesley, Helen Knott, Lauren Brown, Patricia Greer, Barb Burkitt, Ward, Juanita Lindley, Roberta Morgan-Moses, Anna Thomas, Kukpi Judy Wilson and Elizabeth Sam.

To Ryan Day, Kyle Alec, Sierra Hammond, Carrie Bob, Elizabeth Sam, Tracy Porteous, Chastity Davis, Andrea Glickman, Steve Basil, Janice Knighton, Nikki Fraser, Shelley Joseph, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, Aimee Lezard, Anona Kampe, Chris Derickson and Jessie Hemphill for your support, direction and dedication to creating safe spaces for women, thank you for your resources, your time and your love.

To the following organizations who continue to advocate and inspire, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs and the First Nations Leadership Council, BC Native Women’s Association, Ministers Advisory of Indigenous Women’s Council and to the Women’s Coalition for their tireless advocacy for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and to all of the above for advocating for the inclusion of 2SLGBTQQIA.

The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Deputy Mark Sieben for your trust and ongoing support to do things differently. To Executive Lead for Strategic Public Safety Initiatives, Rachel Holmes for your unwavering encouragement and dedication to ensuring space was created for our nations, communities, families and individuals to come together in ways that were required to do the work that we needed to do without having to justify our ways of being and knowing.

To the Family Information Liaison Unit, thank you for your physical presence and strength and ongoing advocacy for the families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls, Men & Boys.

To Minister Mike Farnsworth, Minister Scott Fraser, Minister Melanie Mark, Parliamentary Secretary Mitzi Dean and Assistant Deputy Minister Caroline Kamper, thank you for your support and more importantly, your full presence and participation and witnessing of ceremony for this work.

Contributors
Thank you to the 300 participants who came from all backgrounds to participate in our sessions across the province. Many of you expressed your fears and uncertainty coming into the space and by the end many of you expressed your hope and feeling of empowerment for having the space to express your ideas, solutions and steps that will contribute to a path forward for our communities and organizations.

We recognize and stand in solidarity with 2SLGBTQQIA folks. To preserve the intention of the people in the sessions, at times this/these reports use gendered language that reflects the lived experiences of participants
